Dreams

Every night, the brain builds entire worlds. Understanding what happens while we dream is the simplest doorway into everything else on this map.

We spend roughly a third of our lives asleep, and a good part of that time dreaming. Yet most of us remember only fragments — when we remember anything at all.

What we know

Dreaming happens mostly (though not only) during REM sleep, when brain activity looks strangely similar to waking. The body is paralyzed, the eyes move, and the cortex tells stories.

Keeping a dream journal is the simplest, best-documented exercise: a few weeks are enough to go from “I never dream” to several detailed memories per night. It is also the foundation of every more advanced practice, such as lucid dreaming.

Why start here

This is the most down-to-earth topic on the map: everyone dreams, sleep science is solid, and the first results come quickly. A good foundation before exploring further.
